Since the social movement, Black Lives Matter (BLM), had taken over social media in 2020, museums are urged to examine their social responsibilities and practice social justice. Due to the influence of COVID-19, museums worldwide mostly remained closed to the public, and social media has become the primary channel to connect and interact with the audience. This article begins by addressing the shift of museums' social roles and emphasizes that it is crucial and necessary for museums to reexamine their social responsibilities and connect with society more than they used to. The article explores the application of social media in museums, including promoting exhibitions to bring more visitors in, increasing profit from digital marketing, and connecting and interacting with the audience to build a close community. Because of its high accessibility, social media also gives the public a much direct platform to require museums to reflect their strategies on practising social justice. Lastly, this article looks into how different museums responded to BLM. Although museums claim to stand with diversity and equality, to make meaningful changes, museums need to turn their online statement into actions, such as encouraging open and diverse conversations and improving the diversity among museum management staff.
