这是上一张专辑Highway 61 Revisited的收场曲，长长的歌词中陆续出现一连串人物，包括历史上显赫的名字、神话中的角色，也包括畸零的边缘人。它把这些虚虚实实的人物放在一连串梦魇般的情境中，渲染出一大片没有出路的黑暗风景，以Desolation Row这个意象贯串全曲。有人说，这是「当代美国文化的俯瞰图」。在专辑中这首歌长达十二分钟，已经打破了Dylan歌曲的长度纪录；在演唱会的现场，他则花了足足十五分钟来诠释这首歌。Dylan在这首歌的刷奏颇有西班牙佛莱明哥吉他的味道，在他的作品中比较少见。关於这首歌的论述同样汗牛充栋，限於篇幅，只能先把歌曲中的专有名词做个简单的注解
Cinderella: 灰姑娘，格林童话中的人物。

Titanic: 铁达尼号，人类史上最大的客轮，於1912年首航时沈没，1500人罹难。
Ezra Pound: (1885-1972)二十世纪影响最大的美国诗人之一，意象派（imagism）的创始者。T. S. Eliot在诗坛崭露头角时，他曾经帮过不少忙。
T. S. Eliot: (1888-1965)另一位对美国诗坛影响极大的诗人，有《荒原》、《四首四重奏》等名作。论者以为，Dylan的这首歌受到Eliot的名诗"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"颇多影响。
