I am trying to run a sample spring-boot rest service together with problem-spring-web.
<parent>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
<version>1.5.10.RELEASE</version>
<relativePath/> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.zalando</groupId>
<artifactId>problem-spring-web</artifactId>
<version>0.22.2</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
In my source code, I have a configuration class with the required modules registered to the ObjectMapper, a ExceptionHandling class implementing ProblemHandling (incl.
@ControllerAdvice
), the additional configuration in the application.yaml and the
@EnableAutoConfiguration(exclude = ErrorMvcConfiguration.class)
. For the last annotation, I tried both,
@SpringBootApplication
with additional
@EnableAutoConfiguration(...)
and the four replacements for
@SpringBootApplication
. Last but not least, I copied the RestController from your example.
HTTP/1.1 406
Content-Type: text/html;charset=utf-8
Content-Language: en
Content-Length: 806
with a html error page.
Can someone give me a hint to get the correct application/json+problem response?
Best regards
From the first glance it sounds like it should indeed work. Interestingly the Accept: application/xml part from the docs was actually not working like described until the very latest patch. But it should now.
Could you create a minimal project on github that showcases the problem?

Looks like Spring is ignoring our decision to respond with a problem json even if the client didn't signal that it supports it.
If you do this:
curl -H 'Accept: text/plain, application/problem+json' http://localhost:8080/products/123
then it works:
{"title":"Not Acceptable","status":406,"detail":"Could not find acceptable representation"}
If the header field is
present in a request and none of the available representations for
the response have a media type that is listed as acceptable, the
origin server can either honor the header field by sending a 406 (Not
Acceptable) response or disregard the header field by treating the
response as if it is not subject to content negotiation.
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7231#section-5.3.2
The 406 (Not Acceptable) status code indicates that the target
resource does not have a current representation that would be
acceptable to the user agent, according to the proactive negotiation
header fields received in the request (Section 5.3), and the server
is unwilling to supply a default representation.
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc7231#section-6.5.6
Ok, I have reproduced this behavior with "Accept: application/xml, application/problem+json".
Not a nice solution since you don't know your clients for every service.
@whiskeysierra , is this anything you can fix within the problem-spring-web module? Or do I need to implement a special solution for this in my service? Or do we just need to wait for spring to fix this?
The issue is your config in application.yaml => @EnableAutoConfiguration(exclude = ErrorMvcConfiguration.class)
Remove this and it should start to work.
