This thesis studies the foreign policy of Ukraine after its independence on August 24, 1991. Located in Eastern Europe, Ukraine''s intertwined relations with its east side neighbor, Russia, remain always a high priority on its diplomatic agenda. On the other side of the border, Ukraine also seeks to establish friendly and promising relations with NATO as the Atlantic Alliance expands eastward. The conclusion of this thesis suggests that Ukraine''s foreign policy in the future should take a more flexible stance on its national sovereignty in the interest of its economic prosperity. It is also important for Ukraine to avoid the implementation of extreme band-wagoning or balancing act and maintain its non-alliance policy with NATO at the same time in order to cope with Russia. In addition, seeking to establish a non-nuclear zone in the region with Central and Eastern European countries in pursuit of security and stability is also a possible direction of Ukraine*s future foreign policy. In so doing, Ukraine*s geostrategic importance within the region would be further appreciated.
