Founded in 1965, EF (Education First) is a global association of education companies that shares a common mission of opening the world through education, offering language, academic, cultural exchange and education travel programs.
Some companies are in the business of technology. Others are in the business of finance, sports, or soft drinks. At EF, we’re in a different kind of business. One that’s a little less tangible, and a lot more important. We’re in the business of understanding.
For 60 years we’ve been the leader in international educational programs and culturally rich travel experiences with the power to change how people think, feel and act. The programs we deliver open the world to students and travelers in ways that challenge biases, overcome barriers, and pave the way for a more understanding world. You’ll find us working across more than 50 countries, with offices in some of the world’s greatest cities—each one filled with smart, driven people who push each other to be better every day. And yes, we have technology, we have finance, we even have sports with our own professional cycling team. But it’s what we do with it—building greater understanding, breaking down barriers, and creating a better world that makes all the difference.

The secret's out.
After traveling the world, the top secret envelope has reached its final destination...
The 2025
EF Pro Cycling
Tour de France team is HERE. Good luck from all the colleagues around the world!
EF has quite literally changed the trajectory of my life–I traveled with EF as a college student in 2009. I started planning my first EF tour my first year teaching and led that trip in 2017 to England and France, then I did the SAME itinerary with my students that I did as a college student to Italy & Greece in 2019, and took a whooping 76 students with me to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in 2022. Earlier in 2022, I accepted a position at EF as a Tour Consultant for schools in Virginia, and now I get to help teachers in my community start travel programs in their schools! It's an absolute blast!

Last week,
Efekta Education
Group CEO Stephen Hodges and Chief Product Officer
Lee Schuneman
hosted a roundtable for journalists to introduce its next-generation AI-powered learning platform designed to work alongside human teachers, delivering personal tutoring and teaching assistance with meaningful results at scale for students, governments and companies worldwide.
At the event, Efekta also announced the world’s largest AI education pilot: more than four million students across Latin America are now learning English with Efekta and Addi, its award-winning AI tutor, which was recently honored with the
Apple
Cultural Impact Award.
We were proud to see the gathering covered in
Forbes
.

Very nice mention of Efekta's AI technology in this Forbes article. If we are successful in our ambition of reaching 100 million students by 2030, we will have a massively positive contribution on learning outcomes. Starting with English. But not stopping with English.

60 stories for 60 years
The Hult family’s relocation to Santa Barbara, California, marked a significant step for EF’s expansion. “We were about to close on a house in Zurich,” recalled Bertil, “when Lisbeth said, ‘Are we sure we’re doing the right thing? Shouldn’t we move to California instead?’” The decision aligned perfectly with Bertil’s growing focus on Latin America and Japan, positioning EF to expand its reach in these markets.
In Santa Barbara, EF thrived. The new headquarters became a hub of activity, and Bertil began researching a program to send American students to Europe to experience culture and history. California’s relaxed environment provided a unique vantage point for building EF’s global footprint while maintaining proximity to key markets.
The Hult family settled into the Californian lifestyle, with the young boys enjoying outdoor activities and the spacious Hope Ranch property. Bertil and Lisbeth were easy going, supportive, and believed in giving their sons freedom. “I always felt they were lenient, compared to other parents,” Bertil’s son, Alex, says. “They never pushed us. They empowered us to make our own decisions.”
The Hults celebrated holidays and birthdays with EF friends. “The company was always an integral part of our early life, and my childhood,” said Alex. “I remember loving the dinners that my parents hosted for office friends. I never wanted to leave, preferring to fall asleep in some corner or sofa as I listened to the murmur of voices around the table.”
After five years of success in Santa Barbara, Bertil began considering EF’s next move. “California was far away from Europe,” he reflected. “And Boston so much closer.”
