In the past, I've translated documents in Word. Now, Word cannot translate the same documents unless I remove the images or the TOC or reduce the document down to plain text. And sometimes even then, Word won't translate.
I tried all the settings described for the Trust Center; nothing works. I updated and rebooted. Still have the same issue.
I can translate selections; I just cannot translate a document.
Are there any workarounds beside using Google Translate?

As per your description, when you translate a specific document in Word, you get the error message "Document translation failed. Please try again."
You may upload the document to OneDrive and open it in Word for the web app, check if it can be translated successfully. This way helps you determine if the issue only happens in Word desktop application, or the specific document has problem.
You may also try creating a copy for that document, either get a copy from File>Save as, or manually copy content and paste it into a new document. Test the copy and see it translate works. If yes, use the copy as a workaround.

I tried again this morning. Your first suggestion ("...upload the document to OneDrive and open it in Word for the web app, check if it can be translated successfully.") worked this time. Am I correct in assuming that the problem is my desktop Word application? I already ran the repair for Office and I still cannot translate using the desktop application.
Any other suggestions?
