"She and Her Cat" is a 5-minute black and white animated short film independently produced by Japanese director
Makoto Shinkai
in 1999. It was officially released in 2000 and won the 12th CG Animation Competition Grand Prize. The work was created against the backdrop of Shinkai's personal efforts while working at Falcom. It depicts the daily life fragments of a woman living alone in the city and a male cat she adopts. It was later adapted into a novel in 2013, and a 4-episode television anime series titled "She and Her Cat: Everything Flows" was released in 2016.

The animation, from the perspective of the male cat, depicts the details of its life after being adopted by the girl, describing the cat's attachment to the girl's face, scent, and words, as well as a plot point where it rejects the confessions of other cats. As the seasons change, the story reveals a melancholic tone where the cat ultimately cannot console the girl's inner loneliness.

One day long ago, "he" was picked up and brought home by a beautiful, gentle girl, beginning what "he" considers an extremely happy life. The girl lives alone and works a job whose nature "he" neither knows nor minds; what "he" cares about is the expression on her face when she leaves early in the morning, the faint fragrance on her, the soft tone of her voice when she greets "him," and the gentleness of her touch when she pets "him"... So much so that later, when a cat named Mimi confesses her love to "him," "he" politely declines—"he" has long been completely captivated by the girl. However, as seasons pass one after another, "he" ultimately cannot soothe her lonely heart.
