Established in 1965, Galerie Gmurzynska is an international art gallery with locations in Switzerland in Zurich and Zug, as well as the Galerie Gmurzynska USA Inc. in the United States in New York. The gallery specialises in 20th century Modern and Contemporary Classics. The gallery’s program is centered on presenting exhibitions of the work of art historically important 20th and 21st Century artists accompanied by scholarly catalogs.

#Zurich | Artwork Spotlight – Ronnie Cutrone, “Brillo Soup” (1999) When #AndyWarhol first presented his “Brillo Box” in 1964, it blurred the boundaries between consumer product and artwork—an act that would reverberate through the art world for decades. With his “Campbell’s Soup Cans,” #Warhol continued to question the divide between commercial imagery and fine art. #RonnieCutrone , Warhol’s longtime assistant at The Factory from 1972 to 1982, carried that spirit forward in his own vibrant Neo-Pop practice. After leaving the Factory, #Cutrone began appropriating Warhol’s iconic motifs—such as the Brillo Box—but infused them with his own visual language, prominently featuring cartoon characters like Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, and Woody Woodpecker. Having helped Warhol create iconic series, such as the “Ladies and Gentlemen,” 1975, “Oxidation, Piss, and Cum,” 1977–78, and “Shadows,” 1978–79, Cutrone quickly became celebrated for his own paintings of popular cartoon characters, often rendered on the American flag. At the gallery, Warhol is represented by a series of Polaroid photographs and paintings: his portraits of drag queens from “Ladies and Gentlemen,” male nudes from the 1977 “Sex Parts and Torsos” series, and depictions of celebrities and friends. Meanwhile, the lesser-known Cutrone gets a complete overview. A self-portrait and an portrayal of Raggedy Andy are both painted on American flags. There are paintings of Felix the Cat and a cartoon bear on a flag from the Soviet Union. Bart Simpson appears nude on a quilt, and crosses are painted on boxes of Cap’n Crunch cereal. Serving as a testament to the lasting legacy of Pop Art, the show is vividly showcased in the gallery’s distinguished Zaha Hadid-designed space. “Warhol/Cutrone” is on view through September 30, 2025, at Galerie Gmurzynska at Paradeplatz 2, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland.
